The 7 Ways My Yoga Practice Has Changed My Life

My yoga practice is mine, all mine… and it’s completely changed my life, without much effort at all. I guess I’ve always had the wrong idea about what yoga was and what it did for you.  I assumed it was better in a structured way, in a classroom setting, or much worse, a heated, stuffy room.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure Hot Yoga is good for you. But as someone that despises the heat… I’ll leave that to the yoga enthusiast. Everyday my yoga routine is a little different. Some days, I do a long, cardio intensive routine… other days, my routine consists purely of movements that resemble variations of corpse pose, childs pose or any other pose that doesn’t require me to move or open my eyes. The best thing about it… it’s MY practice, and MY routine. So, how has something so simple, so accommodating, so relaxing changed my life for the better? 1. Oxygen is life… Learn how to breathe again. Something so simple, yet we take it for granted. Have you ever paid attention to your breathing? Like, truly paid attention to it? How deeply do you breathe? Do you hold your breath? You can go for extended periods without food or even water, but we can’t survive minutes without oxygen. Think about that…. If you don’t breathe, you die. What happens if you don’t breathe well? What happens if you’re not getting the right amount or the right quality of oxygen when you are breathing? Have you ever considered that? I hadn’t. Yoga has helped me realize how important it is to fully breathe in, and to fully exhale out. It’s also helped me to realize how often I don’t do that, throughout the day.  I frequently find myself amped up, irritated and breathing…

Why Yoga?

I HATE exercising.  Well, technically I just hate cardio. I’m all for exercise that makes me feel good and strong, while also making me feel like I’m not doing much. Yeah, I’m the laziest exerciser ever! I’ve forced myself onto ellipticals and treadmills. I’ve forced myself to do sit ups, the devils creation for sure.  I’ve done more squats and burpies in my life than I care too (although, I draw the line at ever doing another burpy for the rest of my life)…. I’ve joined gyms and fitness groups, and surprisingly, as lazy as I am… all of my very closest friends are fitness instructors. So, that’s weird, right?   I hate working out, I hate sweating, I hate fighting for my breathe… but I do enjoy the idea of feeling strong and being healthy.   I was enjoying the fresh air on my patio one day, thinking about how I should probably work out… but wouldn’t it be nicer if I could just sit here and enjoy the fresh air, while benefiting from it? As I started to expand that thought, I was getting more and more curious… I mean, I’ve done yoga in the past. I’ve ‘tried’ meditating.  But I also know so many people that swear by it… not a one of them collecting as much mid section goo as I had. I figured, there must be something to it, so I decided to do a little research. The premise of such ‘easy’ movements went against everything my brain connected to strength. Exercise is miserable, hard, sweaty…. How can you possible get stronger when you’re laying there in corpse pose? (my favorite pose)   I decided, like everything else in my life, that I just needed to understand WHY it worked. I needed to understand the…

It’s MY Yoga Practice

I tried hot yoga one time. I say one time… it was actually 2 weeks of hell. Literally, why does anyone subject themselves to the heat and smell of a hot yoga center?  I did… every day for 2 weeks.  My friend said that I would learn to love it.  Instead, I think I plotted out a few hundred ways to seek vengeance on her for convincing me to try it, while holding the same damn pose over and over again. Now, before you defend how fabulous hot yoga is for you… I’m sure it’s fabulous and amazing… for you. I live in the desert, but I HATE heat.  I don’t like it when the air suffocates you and tries to cook you inside and out.  Dramatic, sure…. but that’s how I felt about that boiling, steamy, smelly room. The other day, I was laying on my mat. I had installed roofing the day before.  I was sore, and stiff…. and I lay there thinking about how unmotivated I was.  Then I remembered reading about how Yoga is a “practice”. Not only is it a practice, but this is YOUR practice. This is my favorite part of my new routine… every day can be different. Every day can be another level of resistance, or none at all. If today is a purely a stretch day, that’s ok. I laid there, on my mat, feeling stiff and sore because I was climbing up and down a ladder the day before. My fingers were scraped and blistered from swinging a hammer and carrying scratching roofing… It was ok if I just wanted to stretch all of the things today. I’ve followed a lot of yogis, and none of them ever post the same routine. Perhaps thats because they follow their body’s instruction…
