This Isn’t a Diet

What is eating healthy? According to some people, it’s avoiding dairy, or meat. Other people believe that it’s about putting as much dairy or meat in your diet as possible and avoiding all the fruit.  To some people, it’s restricting your diet to a low calorie count, to include sugar free products or processed junk, while to others, it means eating nothing but real, process free foods. Funny story… I actually loved the Whole Food 30 diet. That one made the most sense to me… it was real food.  However, I quickly had a bad taste in my mouth when on a forum I was attacked for admitting that I eat banana, egg pancakes.  I felt like a mob of Whole 30’ers were after me… their reason? Eating things like that is “not in the book”. Apparently, a banana and egg, mixed together and sprinkled with cinnamon is a “Gateway” food to cake. Well…. I don’t like cake, so I felt pretty safe there. I left that forum and the idea of following a ‘diet’ plan that described banana and eggs as a gateway food turned me away from that whole thing. I’ve tried every fad diet out there. Not just in a small way, because you know by now that I really want to know WHY something works. So, with each diet I tried, I buried myself in the books, the blogs, the forums, the groups, even the documentaries. With every diet I tried, I was committed to doing it right! Here’s the problem with Diets…  There are 2 definitions. The first being the foods that one habitually eats.  The other definition is the foods that one restricts themselves to. I don’t like restrictions. In fact, I think, like most people, the idea of restricting something makes me want…

If you’re looking for a healthy waffle to start your day, it’s not going to be found in the freezer section of the grocery store. My husband used to pop a waffle or 2 in the toaster each morning. He was really just looking for something sweet and tasty to start the day. I understood…

Since quarantine began, I’ve been looking for the perfect Pizza Crust recipe. Sure, you can buy a frozen pizza… but you’ll…

The Best Tasting Lentil Soup for Gut Health

By serenahope | March 10, 2021

I’ve been talking about this soup for a while. It started as just a simple lentil soup. My husband would order a side of lentil soup every time we would eat out at one of our favorite restaurants.   It was a pretty basic soup, obviously had lentils, celery and cumin in it… but other than…

Oh, I was so excited about this one.  I was scrolling through social media when I saw a spring form cake pan used for an italian dish. It wasn’t lasagna for them, but that’s how I saw it! Yummy AND fun! Challenge Accepted!! I will admit that a good portion of my meal ideas come…

The Best Hearty Beef Stew

By serenahope | February 26, 2021

When I was a kid, my mom used to make us beef stew occasionally.  When I grew up, I got my hands on that recipe, and realized…. I didn’t much care for it.  Maybe my taste buds refined, I’m not positive.  The original recipe was simple… Cook stew meat (ew), then add large chunks of…

Roasted Beets

By serenahope | February 10, 2021

I LOVE beets on my salads. I do wonder some times if the canned or jarred stuff at the store is as nutritious as fresh though, you know? Beets are full of essential nutrients and vitamins, including dietary fiber, folate (which is vitamin B9), potassium, iron, manganese, and vitamin C. They’ve also been said to improved blood flow…

Hibiscus Tea for Detox and Health

By serenahope | February 9, 2021

What are the health benefits of Hibiscus leaf, and how do you use it? As an Arizona Native, Hibiscus flowers are in no shortage here… but to find out that they are highly medicinal around the world? That peeked my interest.  The Hibiscus leaves and flowers are used to make a “Sour Tea”.  For those…
